Stylus 770 SW

Our first replacement item from the lightning strike is the digital camera. It was on the charger at the time of the strike and was fried. We're considering the Olympus Stylus 770. We like the option to be able to use in the water up to 30 ft, and it's shock (drop) resistance. Plus we do dive and have only used one-time use camera's, this module has an under-water housing unit that is good to 150 ft. If you've had experience with this digital, underwater or above let us know. I'll attempt to locate some reviews and post the information on this blog. (PS the next electronic will be a video camera).

One persons experience with the digital.
We like:

Real diving now possible with new 33 feet depth limit
Can actually handle depths of 66 feet and more (not recommended, but we tested it)
Inherent waterproofing provides peace of mind when handling in/around water
Can survive 5-foot drops and 14 degree temperature!
Optional PT-035 underwater case good for 133 feet diving
Superb wide-angle, high-res LCD
Very good underwater macro mode
LED illumination and manometer useful.
Not so much:
Use of underwater wide-angle modes requires practice
Strictly point & shoot
Elegant metal body easily gets scratched
Wish it'd fit into the PT-033 case
Need better handstrap for underwater use
Uses often hard-to-find xD-Picture Card

Addition user comments for the 770 SW:
Pros: Fabulous photos, exciting video, quality craftsmanship, durable, good sound, easy handling, great preview screen

Cons: terrible strap for underwater use, short battery life, writes some kind of funky AVI file

The Bottom Line: I recommend this over the Pentax W10, which we used side by side--it's much more solid, far superior photo quality and I learned it's system more quickly.

Pros: Water and Shock Proof

Cons: Clunky user interface; slow/picky image processor that would not acquire good consistent shots.

We haven't had much movement forward on any selection of a digital camera until yesterday. Finally, the decision was made to purchase the Stylus 770 SW. Once we start using the camera I'll post as much information our regarding experience with it.

We should have the camera delivered this week. The sales team we ordered from called over and the weekend and stated they needed more information to complete the order. I think it was a ploy for them to pitch additional accessories, which I regret to say we purchased the 5 year warranty for an additional $30. If it was a ploy it worked on us. :-)

After spending the additional money for the 5 year warrenty. Which honestly this household needs. This will be our 4th digital camera in 5 years. One camera was in my wifes purse while she was on an airplane and lady spilled her entire can of soda in her purse. The camera took a Dr. Pepper bath the entire flight before any noticed what had happened.
-The new digital hasn't been delivered yet. Once it's received I'm sure we'll have a lot of information to provide regarding its abilities. Since this digital camera is water proof, we shouldn't have to worry about any spills. Hopefully.

After calling the camera store and enlightening them about the mistake they made shipping us the wrong camera their representative proceeded to state the 770 is out of stock for 3-4 weeks. They offered refund us the difference of the 770 versus the 725. Ummm, thought about it, NO!, was our response to that reply. Secondly she stated they would fax us the return shipping information by the time they closed for the night. Never happened!
We are in complete agreement that the sales rep knew the 770 was out of stock and intentionally shipped the wrong model. Now we haven’t been able to reach them since last week and they have a seven day return policy.
Here is the process they put you through:

1. Deliberately don’t process the order because they forget to enter your expiration dates on the credit card and take a week to let you know
2. Swap out camera versions for a model you don’t want because there out of stock and don’t inform the consumer
3. don’t provide the return information in a timely manner

Last but not least, I need to let you know which online store we have attempted to use:

I would not recommend them to anyone at this point.

It has been a few days since our post. To date the online camera store faxed us the return shipping document. We dropped off the wrong camera for shipping the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I'll post a comment confirming our account has been credited. On a more positive note we did get the Sony HDSR 42 yesterday. I'll start a new post that electronic.
